MADRID PROCESOS '11

Noemi Larred: "Kleingarten"

Project and file the 999 sample accounted urban gardens in Berlin. These micro gardens created in the nineteenth century as a solution of self-sufficiency, are now, in addition to this function, as a solution to urban environmental conservation, sustainability and human relationships in natural and alternative today. The project will make a map and a series of photographs in order to recreate a past and come through to the complete fragment: metonymy gardens function as an industrial past and a present that is not.

The urban layout has hosted since its inception culture forms midway between subsistence, resistance against the advance of the metropolis and the persistence of traditional ways of life in the countryside.
Redoubts are vegetables that grow in the interstices of railways, highways, roads and creeks.
[Movement, direction, traffic flow]
Therefore, the garden is a sign of the immutable, topoi is a 1, a settlement with its own organs of organization and management, coexisting with transit points, non-places, that not having an identity per se, does not remain and thus do not exist. Then, the gardens are around them because they are void. Fill gaps, give them useful, loaded with meaning, the return to life and are primarily generators against the sterility of asphalt.
[Statism, strength, permanence, contemplation]
The first is based on anthropogenic processes [logging systematic transformation of land use, infrastructure installation]. The orchards instead on natural cycles [planting, irrigation, flowering, harvesting and consumption]
The current Berlin urban model approximates the ideals of the garden city of Ebernezer Howard. This urban model was a city surrounded by vegetation, without a fixed center, the town should not unfold as cells expand. A place where people can enjoy the green space, and equipment that help make every cell of city self-sustaining.
The land Kleingarten are between 200 and 400 m2 employees par horticulture and flower cultivation for subsistence. Each garden is an independent association that manages itself. The different associations are organized and grouped into different levels: community, district, county, region and state.
As a living [cell, tissue, organ, system, individual]
Urban gardens have historically played an emergency response to the collapse, against wars, economic crises or energy, self-sufficiency. Facing privatization, consumption management alternatives. Faced with speculation solar active appropriation of disused. Now more than ever the city should continue its metabolic pulse from a systems perspective (or organic) and respond with artistic practices related to the active appropriation of public space.

A. Benitez Barrios: Berlin 012

Photo essay proposing a walk through the theories on youth in the contemporary era, linking changes in the lifestyle of young people living in the XXI century Berlin, and drawing a parallel theoretical featuring movements young people in the twentieth century, who made certain changes or influenced cultural, artistic, social and political. Under this perspective through photography and analyzes, and displays portrays the situation of youth today Berlin.
I began this research five years ago, when chance brought me outside the door of a luxurious theater that had outlived its usefulness in the 60s. After that impression remember we were hours, Leyre, my wife and I talking about how life had changed in a short time. The theater was not the only giant that was lost, so would the cinemas, many factories now had their production to Asian countries, or as everyday tools like telephone booths (has anyone seen any in our cities?).
From this concern, I began to document the changes that have taken Old Europe, traveling to Germany, Belgium, Holland, England, Luxembourg ... that way I keep images from our memory, easily missed: mental hospitals, train stations, convents , etc, etc ...
I searched places where the past is accumulated, amassed. And I discovered that the past refuses to go away and stop at the landscape ... fits ... even transforms it.
The scholarship Madrid Process 2011 has allowed me to investigate in the Eastern bloc of Germany that was dominated by the Soviet Union, and that unfortunately is being lost after more than 20 years of neglect. In most cases I felt like an archaeologist privileged visit lost civilizations ancient ruins.
Know if it can be called modern archeology or contemporary archeology, but if it is true that in some way, as they do, I try to join ties, between past and present.

Project consists of seven interventions in the city of Berlin. They choose places not subject to flow or tourist use, reused as climbing spaces spontaneously and anonymously. These new utility sites and question the meaning and use of the artistic and architectural heritage marginal disused, but reconfigured for the uses that people apply to them. The artist portrays these actions using timer photography, no face, to show the anonymous, spontaneous and officially silent on the use and redefinition of public spaces outside the established circles.
In STAMINA (Ruins Ring) have initiated a process of exploration of 7 archaeologies marginales1 located on the outskirts of Berlin (Germany). My initial interest was focused on a selection set in suburban locations, mostly ruinous, and from a broad time range that starts and ends in Romanticism in the 70s.
Through a self-registration including photographic and graphic compile my physical approach to these ruins-through exercises escaladaextrayendo representation patterns; symbols indicating that explored how these places.
Currently, in collaboration with a team of jewelers, I am developing a ring that contains all this information. This ring is an encrypted container that condenses the experience from seven locations, an encryption device cartographic knowledge, archaeological and psychogeographical.
